The fish was a secret symbol between Christians in the terrible persecution of the first church after Christ died. Anywhere the fish was seen a Christian would know that there was another Christian there. It helped them to secretly determine each other as Christians so that they could meet other Christians and get together for worship and teaching (church in private homes and other secret locations). It is not an astrological symbol although there IS one... Pisces the fish but the two have nothing to do with each other. Hope that answers your question. I just noticed that you are "seeking Christ". Welcome to our community of faith. There are many wise people here who know Jesus quite well and if we can say your questions please don't delay to ask. You are very welcome here. Hoot
To add to emit's answer on the fish.. another neat thing about the symbol was that Christians could identify other Christians by drawing half the symbol in the dirt and if the other person finished it they both knew they were Christians!
Hi Staleness,The "Christian fish" is not and never was an astrological symbol from Christianity Today offers some detailed information about its origins and explains why it was originally used. It more recently became a sort of iconic representation which was then adapted by evolutionists and used to mock Biblical truth.
As far as the look for goes they've pretty much answered that although there is more to it than that something about how the letters of His name in another language spelled fish or something along those lines; is how they came up with that symbol. As for the question about astrological references what exactly are you referrring to? Can you furnish some examples? I know there are pleny of things in there about things like new idle feasts and so forth but what exactly are YOU trying to understand?
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall re-create their strength: they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore brethren by the MERCIES of God that ye show your bodies a living sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable function.

The Greek word for fish is "ichthys." As early as the first century. Christians made an acrostic from this word: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter i e. Jesus Christ. Son of God. Savior. The fish has plenty of other theological overtones as well for Christ fed the 5,000 with 2 fishes and 5 loaves (a meal recapitulated in Christian love-feasts) and called his disciples "fishers of men." wet baptism practiced by immersion in the early church created a parallel between fish and converts. Second-century theologian Tertullian put it this way: "we little fishes after the image of our Ichthys. Jesus Christ are born in the water."
We can conclude that the wise men were astrologers: "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem. Saying. Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his feature in the east and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him. In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet. And thou Bethlehem in the land of Juda art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall go a Governor that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod when he had privily called the wise men enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem and said. Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye undergo open him bring me evince again that I may come and adore him also. When they had heard the king they departed; and lo the star which they saw in the east went before them till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. " Matthew 2:1-10 "I shall see him but not now: I shall behold him but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel and shall smite the corners of Moab and destroy all the children of Sheth." Numbers 24:17
